App development cost in India in 2027: real budgets, no fluff

What simple, mid-sized and complex apps cost to build in India, where the money really goes, and the running costs that start the day you launch.

Hand holding a smartphone showing an app interface

Almost every first call about an app starts with the same question: “Roughly how much?” It is a fair question, and “it depends” is a useless answer on its own. So here is what it depends on, with real numbers attached, for apps built by professional teams in India in 2027.

The short version

These budgets cover design, the app itself, a backend, an admin panel, testing and launch on the stores. They exclude GST at 18%.

Typical 2027 budgets for apps built in India, excluding GST.
Kind of appTypical budgetTypical timeline
Focused first version (MVP): a few core features, one type of user₹3 – ₹8 lakh8–12 weeks
Mid-sized app: accounts, payments, notifications, admin panel, a couple of integrations₹8 – ₹20 lakh12–20 weeks
Complex platform: several apps or user roles, real-time features, heavy integrations₹20 – ₹60 lakh+5–9 months+

If someone offers you a “complete app like Swiggy” for ₹60,000, they are selling a template with your logo on it. That can be fine for testing an idea over a weekend. It is rarely something you can grow a business on.

The app is the part you can see. It isn’t most of the work.

Founders tend to picture the screens. The screens are real work, but behind them sits a whole system:

  • Discovery: deciding exactly what version one does and, just as important, what it doesn’t.
  • UX and UI design: flows, screens and a clickable prototype you can put in front of real users.
  • The iOS and Android apps.
  • Backend and APIs: accounts, data, business rules, payments and notifications.
  • Admin panel: the web dashboard your team uses to manage users, orders, content and reports.
  • Testing: across screen sizes, Android versions and patchy 4G, not just the developer’s own phone.
  • Launch: store listings, privacy disclosures, review, release and the first few weeks of monitoring.

On most projects we quote, the backend and admin panel add up to half the effort or more. They are also the first things that disappear from a quote that looks too good to be true.

Budgets for common kinds of app

Indicative first-release budgets. Features and integrations decide the final figure.
Type of appTypical first-release budget
Booking app for a clinic, salon or service business₹5 – ₹12 lakh
Ordering or ecommerce app with an admin panel₹6 – ₹15 lakh
Internal app for field staff or operations₹4 – ₹10 lakh
Delivery app (customer, driver and admin)₹15 – ₹35 lakh
Two-sided marketplace₹20 – ₹50 lakh+
Education app with video, tests and payments₹8 – ₹20 lakh

What moves the number

How many kinds of user you have

This is the biggest single driver. A customer app is one product. A customer app plus a delivery partner app plus an admin panel is three products that happen to share a database.

Native or cross-platform

Separate Swift (iOS) and Kotlin (Android) apps mean building much of the product twice. Flutter or React Native serve both from one codebase, which usually saves somewhere between a quarter and 40% of the app budget for a typical business app. We compare the two properly in Flutter vs React Native in 2027.

Features that sound small

“Just add chat” is rarely just anything. Chat, live tracking, video calls, offline mode and recommendations each bring their own design, backend and testing work. So do OTP login and payments, although those are well-trodden paths now.

Integrations

Plugging into Razorpay is quick. Plugging into a 12-year-old ERP with no documentation is not. If your app has to talk to another system, show your developer that system early.

Security and compliance

Health, finance and anything involving children need stricter access control, encryption, audit logs and privacy work, especially with India’s DPDP Rules coming fully into force in May 2027.

Costs that start the day you launch

  • Apple Developer Program: US$99 a year, billed in rupees in India, so the exact amount moves with the exchange rate.
  • Google Play: a one-time US$25 registration. One catch: new personal Play Console accounts must run a closed test with at least 12 testers for 14 days before they can publish. A business (organisation) account avoids this, which is one more reason to register the account in your company’s name.
  • Cloud hosting: from a few thousand rupees a month for a small app, rising with traffic and storage.
  • Usage-based services: SMS for OTP, maps, email and, increasingly, AI features are billed per use. Model them before launch, not after the first invoice.
  • Maintenance: plan for roughly 15 to 20% of the build cost every year. iOS and Android update every year, store policies change, and libraries need patching.

A word about hourly rates

Established Indian development companies commonly bill somewhere between US$20 and US$50 an hour, depending on seniority and specialism. Comparing vendors on hourly rate alone is a trap. A senior team at ₹3,500 an hour that finishes in 800 hours costs less than a junior team at ₹1,800 an hour that needs 2,000 hours and a rescue project afterwards. Compare total cost for the same written scope instead.

How to spend less without building something fragile

  1. Launch a real MVP. The smallest version that proves people want it. Our guide to MVP development in India shows how to cut a feature list down without gutting the idea.
  2. Go cross-platform unless you have a specific reason not to.
  3. Use proven services for login, notifications and payments instead of building your own.
  4. Keep the admin panel plain. Your team needs it to work, not to win awards.
  5. Consider whether you need an app at all yet. For some businesses, a fast website or a progressive web app does the job for a fraction of the cost. We explain when in website, PWA or mobile app: what to build first.
  6. Write the requirements down. Changes cost almost nothing on paper and a great deal in code.

What’s different about app budgets in 2027

Users now expect a bit of intelligence in apps: search that understands what they meant, sensible suggestions, support that answers at 11 pm. Some of that is worth building and some of it is a gimmick with a monthly bill. We break down which is which, with costs, in AI chatbots and AI features in 2027.

The other shift is regulation. From May 2027 the DPDP Rules require clear notices, consent you can prove, breach reporting and verifiable parental consent for users under 18. Apps collecting personal data should be designed for this from the first sprint.

How we scope apps at Razegreen

Every app project with us starts with a short product workshop. It turns your idea into a prioritised first release, a technical plan and an itemised fixed-price estimate. You own the code and the store accounts, you get a new test build on your phone every two weeks, and launch includes a 30-day warranty. Our mobile app development services in Chennai page explains how that works in more detail.

FAQ

Quick answers.

Is Flutter cheaper than native app development?

For most business apps, yes. One Flutter codebase covers iOS and Android, which usually reduces both build and maintenance effort compared with two native apps. Native still makes sense for graphics-heavy apps or deep hardware work.

Can I build an app for ₹50,000 in India?

You can buy a template or “clone” app for that. It rarely fits a real business without heavy changes, and ownership, security and support are often unclear. A properly built first version with a backend and admin panel usually starts around ₹3 lakh.

How long does it take to build an app in India?

A focused MVP typically takes 8 to 12 weeks. Apps with payments, several user types and integrations usually take 12 to 20 weeks, and larger platforms longer.

Do I need a website as well as an app?

Almost always. People discover apps through search, the stores expect a privacy policy and support page, and many customers will want to learn about you before installing anything.
