Ecommerce website development cost in India for 2027 (with Chennai numbers)
Store budgets by size and platform, the fees that eat into every order, and the features worth paying for before your first sale.

An online store isn’t a website with a cart bolted on. It is a small operations system: products, stock, payments, invoices, couriers, returns, customer messages. That’s why ecommerce quotes swing so widely, and why the cheapest one so often turns into the most expensive store you ever own.
Here is what it costs to build an ecommerce website in India going into 2027, what the fees look like once orders start coming in, and where it is worth spending more.
What to budget
These are typical budgets from established agencies and studios, including those in Chennai, before GST at 18%.
| Type of store | Typical budget | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Starter store on a quality theme, up to about 100 products | ₹45,000 – ₹1,00,000 | 2–4 weeks |
| Custom-designed store with payments, shipping and GST invoices set up properly | ₹1,00,000 – ₹3,00,000 | 4–8 weeks |
| Larger catalogue, custom features, ERP or inventory sync | ₹3,00,000 – ₹8,00,000 | 8–14 weeks |
| Headless or fully custom store, B2B pricing, marketplace features | ₹8,00,000 – ₹25,00,000+ | 3–6 months |
For most small and mid-sized Indian brands, the sensible target is the second row. It is where a store stops looking like everyone else’s and starts being run properly behind the scenes.
What an ecommerce budget actually pays for
When you compare quotes, check whether each of these is included, because each one is real work:
- Store design for the home page, category pages, product pages, cart and checkout, on mobile first.
- Catalogue set-up: importing products, variants like size and colour, images, filters and search.
- Payments: a gateway such as Razorpay with UPI, cards, net banking and wallets, plus cash on delivery rules if you offer COD.
- Shipping: zones, rates, pincode checks, and a courier or shipping aggregator integration for labels and tracking.
- Tax: GST-compliant invoices with the right HSN codes and rates.
- Notifications: order confirmation, dispatch and delivery updates by email, SMS or WhatsApp.
- Analytics: GA4 ecommerce tracking and Google Merchant Center, so you can see what sells and advertise it.
- Training, so your team can add products, process refunds and pull reports without calling anyone.
The costs that come with every order
Build cost is a one-off. These are not, and they decide whether a sale is actually profitable:
| Cost | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Payment gateway | Around 2% per transaction on standard plans, varying by payment method and provider |
| Platform subscription | Shopify charges a monthly plan fee. WooCommerce is free, but you pay for hosting and any paid extensions |
| Shipping | Per order, by weight and zone, usually through an aggregator or a direct courier contract |
| COD handling and returns | COD fees plus the cost of parcels that come back undelivered |
| Apps, extensions and messaging | Reviews, WhatsApp messages, loyalty and search tools, often billed monthly or per message |
Returned COD parcels deserve special mention. For many Indian stores they are the single biggest leak in the business. Simple fixes like confirming COD orders on WhatsApp before dispatch, blocking COD for high-risk pincodes, or offering a small discount for prepaid UPI orders usually save more money than any design change.
Worth paying for before your first sale
- A fast mobile product page. Most of your visitors arrive on a phone, often from Instagram or WhatsApp. If the page stalls, they leave.
- A short checkout. Guest checkout, UPI up front and as few fields as possible.
- Proper product photography. Nothing on the page works harder.
- Clear shipping, returns and COD information near the “Add to cart” button, not buried in the footer.
- Search and filters once you have more than about 50 products.
Fine to add later
Loyalty points, product bundles, subscriptions, a custom mobile app, recommendation engines and multi-currency pricing. Get the basics converting first and let your sales data tell you which of these is worth it.
How the platform changes the price
The platform decision affects both the build cost and what you pay every month for years. In short: Shopify is quicker to launch and fully managed, with ongoing subscription and app costs. WooCommerce gives you full ownership and flexibility with no platform fee, but needs someone to look after updates. Custom or headless builds cost the most upfront and suit large catalogues or unusual business rules. We go through it properly in Shopify vs WooCommerce for Indian stores.
What changes in 2027
- UPI is the default. Checkout should lead with it, including UPI intent on mobile so customers jump straight to their payment app.
- WhatsApp is part of the store. Order updates, COD confirmation and abandoned-cart reminders on WhatsApp now outperform email for most Indian audiences.
- Marketing consent needs to be real. Under the DPDP Rules, which apply fully from May 2027, you’ll need clear notices and consent you can prove before sending promotional messages. See our DPDP checklist.
- Search is becoming conversational. Google’s AI features and on-site search that understands “cotton kurta under 1500 for office” are raising expectations. Good product data (titles, attributes, sizes, materials) matters more than ever.
How to keep the cost sensible
- Start with the products that sell, not the whole catalogue.
- Choose a well-supported theme and customise it, rather than designing every template from scratch, if budget is tight.
- Use proven integrations for payments, shipping and reviews instead of custom builds.
- Write product descriptions yourself if you know the products well, and let the agency edit them.
- Plan a second phase three months after launch, funded by what you learn from real orders.
Once the store is live, budget for upkeep too. Our website maintenance cost guide covers what online stores typically spend each month.
How we build stores at Razegreen
We start with your catalogue, margins and how orders are fulfilled, then recommend a platform and send a fixed-price proposal. Every store is tested with real orders on every payment method before launch, and your team is trained to run it. See our ecommerce website development services in Chennai for the details.
